Let The Games Begin

Happy New Year everyone. It has been a busy day as we have been preparing camp. Lots of training, lots of sharing and getting to know another and our cultures. There is a great level of energy among this group...very infectious, well at least in spirit as I am definitely feeling my years and lack of a full nights sleep due to the jet lag; keep waking up at 3 in the morning.  Aaaagh!

In between our training we have spent much time in setting up for camp: choosing game leaders, game locations, cabin assignments, determining how we are going to get 230 sets of dishes washed, where will we hold Bible classes, who is teaching what, what service projects can we do, where we'll play dodge ball after dinner (most important). For supper, we enjoyed sitting outside under a beautiful evening eating pojke...most amazing, traditional South African dish of potatoes, carrots, beef, onions, squash, and spices slow cooked over coals in a cauldron. Yumola!  After dinner, we covered some important rules and last minute training items, then lit a huge bonfire, played music, danced, and brought in the new year.

There are still a few things we must do before the kids come, but I dare say we all desirous of their arrival. so off to bed for some much needed rest. Tomorrow the games begin!  Good night, Jeff

Training Day

Africa is amazing! Today has been great! Today we are here with just the American team and the South African counselors and going over basic rules for camp. The bus ride over to the camp was a bit lengthy, but it went by fast thanks to the entertainment! The South Africans started teaching us some of their songs, and soon the whole bus was full of singing and laughter as we all sang praises to God! It was definitely an awesome start to our day. Once we arrived to the campsite, we realized almost immediately that it was much larger than last year. And beautiful. So beautiful. From any spot at camp you can look out and see the mountains and lakes and trees and all of God's masterpiece! After going over camp rules and guidelines and learning some do's and don't's about all the different cultures, we broke into different groups to make potjie (pronounced "poy-key"). If you don't know what that is (which I'm assuming you don't, it's basically where you take a small pot and cook a bunch of veggies and meat on the fire! I can't wait to see how they turn out! Can't wait to see everyone soon!

Definitely Remembering Eternal African Memories

Heaven. A far away place, an unreachable goal, a majestic prize for an undeserved life. Today Heaven felt closer than ever. Yesterday while driving into the slums such a worry free place with no pain and suffering seemed like an unrealistic vision. Then within moments, with the first laugh of a kid, it seemed that Heaven was once again established on earth. As I held hands of these once strangers I felt myself becoming more and more excited about the eternity that I have been promised to spend with them. Today in church we praised as if God was on his way back this very day. I wonder why I find it so hard to praise this way daily? I looked around the room at my brothers and sisters trying my hardest to imprint their faces on the deepest parts of my heart. I closed my eyes and imagined the place we had all been promised. It was clearer then ever. Today Heaven was not far away. It was in each smile, each song and each soul. In that way Africa has certainly hit close to home , my heavenly home. Emily Shapiro

Another Day in Paradise

Greetings from Soweto!!
Today our group visited the Soweto Region of the Johannesburg  Church of Christ for our service. Let's just say that their music alone is so uplifting and moving. They know how to praise God in such a different, yet totally amazing way. Jeff spoke and did a wonderful job speaking about the miracles of God and what he can do. My favorite part was when he spoke about fear he said God is now and the present and you can only fear what is in the future. So if you focus on God then you will have no fears.
To end the day we did a little tour of the town and where I personally ate my first African buffet lunch. I must say, it was pretty good.  We also saw Nelson Mandela's first home.
I woke up this morning thankful for another day, and tonight I'll be able to go to sleep even more thankful than before thanks to another great day in Africa and for this wonderful experience.

I had the opportunity to go to a Lion Park and boy was it a fantastic experience. Doesn't get much better than petting lion cubs in South Africa.  Cameron

On Sunshine, Children, and Thunderstorms

Hey! This is Chelsi from Columbia! I'm so excited about being in South Africa; it still seems unreal. It's so crazy that it's summer here. The days in summer here are even longer than the days in the States - I heard someone say that the sun rose at 4 this morning! I wouldn't actually know, I slept to the very sunny hour of 6 a.m.

Today was incredible! We traveled to a kids' camp in Itsoseng and played with the children. They were so excited and fun to talk to and dance with. You could just tell from being around them how much it meant to them. We provided games and supplies, and we were told that this was HOPE's first time doing a party like this. It was so hard to leave, but I'm so grateful we were able to make an impact on these kids' lives.

Oh! Also, we had our first South African thunderstorm today, and it was insane! I love rain and thunder and lightening, but it was both the loudest and the quickest storm I've ever experienced.

Tomorrow we'll be worshiping in Soweto and then touring, and I can't wait

The picture above we are eating dinner at Dr. Elija and Valerie Nkosi's house along with several other families.  They will be our medical staff at camp.

Cheers!
Chelsi

Hope Kids Club. I'm in love with Africa.

Wow. Words cannot even begin to describe my love for the people of South Africa and I've been here less than a day. Our host families and the members of the church here are incredibly loving and selfless and have really made us feel at home. I could go on and on about the family I am staying with but for now I want to focus on this morning.
We were given the opportunity today to come and spend time with the children who live in an area called Diepsloot when translated means a deep ditch. These children come from really hard backgrounds and yet I've never seen kids this happy and grateful. We got to know each other and then my group, the 10-13 year olds, drew a picture of their dream for their future and then played some American games like dodge ball, red rover, and freeze tag. Nobody really understood the rules and nobody even cared. It was pure joy. I came expecting to serve and knew I would be touched, but I couldn't have imagined the love I would feel for these wonderful children. I'd love to keep blogging but its time for the dance contest before our lunch of KFC (They love it!)
Love to family, friends, and anybody else reading this. This is an answered prayer and the experience of a lifetime. Jacob Richardson

The God that Cares

Wow! I don't even know where to begin! My name is Julia Casazza and I'm a sophomore at Kennesaw State University! We have only been here for a few hours and already I am in love with South Africa. I have been to a third world country before and so when they said that we would be spending time at a school with kids that were either orphans or impoverished I had some idea what to expect. We have been here for less then an hour and I am in love with the kids. They are so loving. There are a couple girls who won't let go of my hands and keep looking at my South African colored nails. Even now as I type I know that leaving here will be hard. One thing that Dr. Mark told us was that God was near the widows and the children. He said that if we guessed where God was it would be at this school. How comforting that is to know that even when we leave we have a God that loves them more than I do and will take care of them.

Cheers When the Wheels Hit the Runway!

Yes, our group broke out in spontaneous and loud cheering when we hit the runway upon our landing in S. Africa.  How fun...and fun to watch some of the S. Africans on the plane.  Many of us got to share why we are here and we are doing.  Cool!

What a smooth flight, got through customs easily and our bus was on time--Thanks to Rodwell and Karen, who has set up all our logistics.  We drove to the church building and met all the host families and as I type this everyone has gone and are on their way.  Hopefully, they will get a great night sleep as we meet back at the building tomorrow morning at 8am to go play with the Itsoseng kids.  Thanks to all the families who are hosting us!  Well about to dive into some pizza!  Until tomorrow.

BTW, you can expect more posts from other people starting tomorrow.

Have a great day!

Jeff

In Our Seats and Ready...To...Go!!

There is such a cool buzz on the plane.  Big smiles as our team boarded.  They still can't believe they are going to Africa.  It is so inspiring to know how much faith and work are behind those smiles; all that went in to raising money and the hope of making a difference.  I wonder how that buzz will be after 16 hours in 2x4 space.  I am confident it will be off the charts.  Sleep well!  Talk to you tomorrow around lunch time. Jeff

Baaaaaaaasaaabeeennnyyaaaaa baba bee te baba

This is o surreal!  We are both so ecstatic to see what God is gonna do through us at camp.  What an honor to serve in such an incredible way!!! AAAAAAAH!!! THIS IS REAL LIFE!!!!  Shout out to jwoo2142.  Dueces y'all.  Love Elyse and Halie

Excited as a Kid on Christmas Eve

I couldn't sleep last night because I am so excited to return to a country that stole my heart last year. This past year has gone by faster than I expected. Not a day went by when I did not think of the wonderful people I met last year on Swamp Corps South Africa. I have anxiously awaited this day since we left last year; I felt like Paul longing to see the Corinthians. I cannot wait to be reunited with my South African brothers and sisters tomorrow. The 16 hour flight is well worth it!

5 Days to Wheels Up

I can't believe we are only 5 days until we leave for our second trip to South Africa…and am I ready to go or what! Now that most of the planning is done, I am truly ready to get on a plane. The camp has been sold out for over two months and the kids in southern Africa (yes multiple countries are coming…I think there is a camper from Malaysia coming!) are fired up! The theme of Youth Camp 2013 is the Hunger Games and is entitled "Not A Game" Yes!! Rodwell and Osylia and the crew have been working very hard to prepare not only for the camp but our arrival as well. There are bunch of families hosting us. There 34 for us going this year and 26 of those are first timers to Africa. Wow! What fun. Well back to that last minute Christmas shopping…and, oh yeah, packing! See ya, Jeff

No Snakes. Two Breaks.

Hey its Kyle and Sara. So this week we each broke the same bone playing dodgeball. NBD, we are basically twins.

The departure

Of all three years this year's departure was the saddest. Not only because it was the last year, but because of my campers. This year I got the priviledge  of counseling boys 1 and it was so sad to see a few of my campers crying just a couple of minutes ago as we left.  This took me by surprise since most of them were crazy all week and showed little emotion. It was cool to see that I could make an impact there on those kids even though I am a first time counselor and only 16. It was a great way to end an amazing summer. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.

You're a Star

in order from left to right: Olivia Anderson, Jonell Campbell, Alanis Espinosa.

We are all from cabin three at Jam Camp and are enjoying every single moment!!!! Today as JamCampers 2012 we made history by having our very first bonfire.
It was like a hot sauna but it was fun. We have learned that no matter where you are from, we are all unified in God. He is the one who brings us all together from all around the world. It's only the second day of camp and we have learned so much and made many new and strong relationships with one another. That's what camp does and we are forever grateful for that. During the starlight devotion we all gathered together under the stars learning about how small and yet significant we are to God. Can you guys just imagine how big the universe may be but yet still God took the time to create us individually in His own image. Do you still wonder if you're special? Still wondering? Well you are.

camp is the best

cabin cleanliness

(insert southern accent here) Hey Ya'll!!
So today is day 2 of JamCamp 2012, home of the "Swamp Olympics", you should see our banner it's pretty awesome -per Jeff picture coming in a soon-to-be post ;). Right now out on the field now all manner of games are underway, so i've chosen now to do the sneakiness called cabin judging muhahaha ;). i must say initially i was having kittens about judging the girls cabins, it really wasn't so bad. For the most part the girls did a great job of putting their stuff away and cleaning the floors. i do confess some of them did weasel their way into my heart by being creative in how the tidied their spaces and used what was available to em to give the best impression. What i did learn (actually learning as i write :), is that cabin cleanliness really is a team sport. It's about being unified as one, working as a unit the same goal in mind; doing as the scriptures say "aiming to show each other as perfect". If you don't do your part and don't look out for your cabin mates then its quite likely that something won't be done or someone will miss something and for that your cabin will lose points. So in effect cabin cleanliness is not about you. Its about all of you. I guess that's a lesson for us all, we should carry our own loads, but we must also carry each others burdens.

JamCamp is on!!!

Well, all the Jamaican campers are here and this picture is the beginning of everyone doing the Cupid Shuffle spontaneously after dinner and dodge ball, of course. We are so glad to be here.

We had a super service with Montego Bay Christian Church and then they made us lunch as we hung out at the beach.  We then took a bus three hours to the camp; up and down some little winding roads.  Wahoo! What an adventure.  We got here about 5pm Sunday and had some great time hanging, training, and getting to know each other (the Jamaican counselors were with us).  There was a miscommunication and so we had no dinner--we thought the staff here was going to have dinner for us--and didn't know how to get any because there was no transportation; Mark & Diedre and the rest of the Jamaican volunteers were not to arrive until later that evening.  So proud of the kids, not once did they complain or get antsy about how they were going to eat. We just kept saying we may have a fast for camp. After the Jamaicans arrived, four people (two of which were Tim & Lacy) drove to the nearest town (back down the windy roads) to a KFC and got us some food.  We ate around 10pm.  Amen!  I think the small KFC was taken back when we ordered food for 40 people. We cleaned them out!

The Jamaican campers arrived today around 11:30AM, and it has been electrifying ever since.  So great to see them again.  Many new faces this year as there are 35 more kids than last year.  Wow!  The word is spreading.  Mark just spoke after showing us a clip from Facing the Giants--the scene called the Death Crawl where the football player crawls 100 yards carrying another player on his back; he challenged us to know that with God we can do more than we can imagine.  He said who would have imagined there would be a camp here and now look: we have people from Brazil here and we've gone to Barbados and South Africa!  He used the word "we"…wow, he really gets that we are worldwide family!  How cool!

Everyone is safe and happy!  Continue the prayers!

Much love, Jeff

Encouragement Dates...Free Ocean on Me

We are finally here!! Our flight was awesome since we didn't have to stop in Miami first! We aren't in our usual hotel, but we love it here! We are right on the beach! And the water is so clear (and salty) All the locals think we are crazy, which is probably true! We watched the beautiful sunset and we are eating right on the beach! It's been like a mini vacation!! Tomorrow camp starts and we are so excited!! It's weird because we have had the amazing opportunity to watch this amazing dream take off and now this is the last year , so it will be bittersweet but an amazing last year here in Jamaica Mon. -Kati and McCall

BimCamp

Man BimCamp was amazing!! It really will change your life and change the kids life. The kids are always so happy to see you and they love to play with you and just have fun. You will not want to leave and plus it just gives you a chance to meet new people and learn about different people and how they live. So my advice is just go and see how much fun you can have.

I Am A Bajan... I Am A Bajan

I am still pumped from last night's 2 hour dance party Haha. I learned so much more than I ever thought I would. Last year was fun, but this year was so much better. Let's just say that the Bajans KNOW how to have fun. I learned how to speak like a Bajan and I think its pretty much unanimous to everyone in Barbados that I am officially fluent... I'm pretty much a pure bred Bajan. It was so great to see everyone again and to see how the camp last year had such a big impact on the kids. I love my Bajans and will miss them so much but I am so excited to be going home. I can't wait to see ny mommy and daddy. Ducessss!!!!! (:

We are all sitting in the Barbados airport waiting to board the plane!!! The week at BimCamp was amazing, we all had an amazing time. I realized how important Swamp was to me, and how it has helped me evolve as a teen disciple. I also really enjoyed seeing everyone connect and enjoy being together as a family, so to speak. The Swamp always leaves everyone pumped, and this time I am really excited to leave the little world we created and bring it to school, and the rest of the world. -Tommy Perkins (and Kalyn and Adam and Jordan and Jordan and Austin and most of Ashlyn and David's hand)

Challenges are Fun! We won!

When we do challenges the most fun thing is dodge ball; the consequences are funny like love letters.  The hardest part is when you face your counselors.  Today we had a dodge ball challenge against girls 1 and we won!  Best out of three, two in a row.  The girls have to make us, boys 1, friendship bracelets.

Bridgetown Church of Christ (Cont.)

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention the highlight of our visit!  The energy in the church was so high that everyone got out of their seats, started dancing, and started a Congo line while singing Praises Heard Around The World! A moment I will never forget.

Bridgetown Church of Christ

I command my hands to praise the Lord! A song we just learned worshipping at the Bridegetown Church of Christ.

Wow! What an incredible service. I am so encouraged by the love of these Bajans. They were so friendly and excited for Bim Camp. It was awesome to see familiar faces and stand together as one praising God.

The beach was the perfect way to rest up for camp. I'm realizing now how much I'll need it because the kids are so stoked to come to camp and have a blast. It's great to see them already warming up to us and acting crazy. That song we learned has hand motions and causes you to make a fool of yourself, but it was awesome because that's perfect for camp.

We're on our way to lunch now to eat at the lady who cooked for us last year.

I can't wait to start counselor training later today and for the kids to shop up tomorrow, even if it means waking up at 6 for the kids who's parents are dropping them off before work- that part I'm not so excited for, but for these kids it's so worth it!

Here's to incredible Bajan food and a great start to the day!

Fun in the Sun

The fun has arrived! That's a Tarzan quote. Anyway, we are here in Barbados! Woohoo! Yesterday was so fun, as we spent the day on the beach, in the pool, and dancing the night away. This morning before we loaded up for church, which is where we are on our way to right now, we talked about how we want to see God work this week. I said I want to see him work through the conversations I have with my campers, since I'll have older girls. I am so excited to see people I met last year, and to meet new people! I can't wait to worship the Lord this morning with my Bajan brothers and sisters. Over and out!

Sunny Day in Paridise

It is so pretty here at the hotel. Were able to eat breakfast right next to the beach! This is the clearest water I've ever seen! The sound of the waves is so relaxing and the breeze is just right :) If you get a pair of goggles and swim down in the water its like watching a hd tv! It's nice to have a good day of relaxing before an awesome week!  Jessica W.

Ahhhhh, My Bed

Ok. I promise more than just me will be blogging; I just want everyone to know we made it safe. Overall an uneventful flight...just like I like them. Ha ha

It's about 80 degrees and VERY humid. We had a cool surprise: as we walked outside the Barbados airport a group of campers and their families greeted us with signs and cheers. It was so good to see them!!  I can't believe it has been a year already.  Their smiles and hugs fired us up!

Tomorrow we will have a day at the hotel with the most amazing water and a beach lime in the afternoon...that's a party on the beach which will be catered. The Bajan counselors and volunteers will join us so a good time to get to know each over and hang. Well, my bed is calling me. Until tomorrow, Jeff

The plane. The plane.

At the gate!  Wahoo, we are all scrambling to get something to eat as security took a little longer than expected. I like our team and can't wait to watch how they draw closer together over the next few days.  Great to see many of the parents earlier today and even got to meet Jordan Jones' grandmother who drove all the way from Birmingham, Alabama to see him off. Now that is just like a grandmother! If you don't feel special after that check your pulse! Keep up the prayers!  Jeff

Ready. Set. Go…Again!

Well, it's been a little more than six months since our last blog and much has happened.  We are one day away from leaving for our 2nd trip to Barbados and a week away from our 3rd trip to Jamaica.   All the planning has been done, the bags are packed, and we are ready to be on a plane.  I know the team is ready too!  And so are the Bajans and Jamaican campers…the Facebook chatter is at a fever pitch.  Please continue your prayers for a safe and productive journey and for many hearts to be moved and changed.

Had a great time at the Summit in San Antonio.  Jennifer and I got to meet with leaders from Brazil and as a result Brazil  will be Swamp Corps' next destination in 2013.  In fact, they are sending two people to Jamaica to see camp and how it works.  Amazing!  We also met for breakfast with Dr. Ashok from Chennai, India ( he leads the HOPE work there and the leader of the Chennai church) and there at breakfast Skyped with their camp director.  We plan to go there in 2014…they hope to send their directors to The Swamp in 2013 for a couple of weeks.  We were also invited to a gathering of people from the Far East during which we met with some leaders of a church in Cambodia; after a lengthy Q&A/discussion session, they asked when we could come there!  2015!  God is gracious and it seems there is a need out there for kids to have a safe place like The Swamp to learn and grow.

Pray for wisdom and resources as we watch this unfold.

Our my love, Jeff

We are boarding our last flight. We are tired, wired, and still fired...up! Stories are still coming to us by email of how much fun and how impactful the camp has been. We expect this to continue for some time. Pray for a safe return and more stories. Much love, Jeff

Miles and miles

After traveling two thirds of the journey, I am amazed at the distance that I feel like I have traveled in both distance and attitude.  My feet hurt, my shoulder is dicey, and my heart will never be the same.  I have been moved and touched by the whole experience.  I have had some great talks with both teens, counselors, and adults.  I can't believe this experience and am humbled that I could be a part of it.  Thank you God!  This is a great group.  I didn't want to leave, but I am ready to see my wife and girls!!!  Thank you to all who supported us.

On our way home!

We did it! Africa has been AMAZING! Camp was such a success for both the Africans and Americans. I feel like we all have learned so much about cultures and about God and the bonding was fantastic. It has been really cool to learn about different words in South Africa as well. Like robots=stoplights and buyadonkey=thank you. Church was also awesome this morning. The kids that attended the camp, both African and American, led the whole thing. And I would like to thank Mr. Jeff for giving me the opportunity to share my heart about camp this week during church as well. As of right now we are standing in line at the ticket counter, dreading leaving but yet can not wait to get home. See you soon!

Every Teardrop is a Waterfall

Charlie shows up to church in a sailor outfit...this was probably one of the happier parts of the day. From the moment we walked into the church building, emotions were rushing. We greeted our friends from camp and made our way up to the front of the room to lead the congregation in song. It was one of the coolest things to sing to God in a completely different language. The whole service was entirely led by counselors and campers. I was utterly amazed by the wisdom and maturity of my young brothers and sisters in the kingdom. As the service came to an end, we closed in song, and the tears came down like waterfalls. It was the hardest thing to say goodbye. Nothing against you guys, but none of us want to go back home. I know I speak for everyone when I say that Joburg has a huge place in our hearts.

My host family was great and fun. They gave me a card I need to give to you. Love you and can't wait to see you.

To Sum It All Up

Amazing. I think that's the only word close enough to describing how amazing this past week has been. Trying to sum up all the friendships made and the emotions created, the tears shed and the laughter heard. Simply... Amazing. As one of the teens here in South Africa, I think it's safe to say that not only do I believe that those five days at camp were some of the best of my teenagehood, but also that after such a camp I know, and I think the rest of the teens here do too, that it's not impossible to make life-long friends in a span of five days. For the parents of the teenagers from the US, thank you SO much for letting your kids come. And to the campers and counselors who came... Keep loving the crew :)

Until Next Year...

Service today was indescribable. All I can say really is that it was like camp had not ended. We tasted the sweetness of heaven today. We started by having all who attended camp walk in during the first song, called Thula Sizwe. We all stood in front of the stage. Some campers shared their favorite part of camp. One of my campers gave me a shout out :) More singing ensued, and everybody was dancing and praising God from the bottom of their hearts. Two boy disciple campers preached the Word today and man, they brought it! They spoke with power, conviction, confidence, and spirit. I was deeply convicted. Reggie did communion, and that was incredible as well. We ended with a medley of Standin in the Need of Prayer, Christian Jubilee, and This Little Light of Mine. Again, all of us campers and counselors got up in front of the stage and sang and danced our hearts out. What happened afterwards only happens in the Kingdom and family of God. Hugging and crying and goodbyes were exchanged. There was not a dry eye. The love that resounded between our hearts was truly the high, long, wide, and deep love of Christ. We are truly united by the love and blood of Christ.
I have left my heart and soul here. Until next year,

The Culture Has Been Passed

The Swamp culture has been transferred.  It was amazing to see a safe fun environment develop in Africa.  There was a dramatic difference from the first day to the last day.  I cried several times during the thank you devotional.  This has been one of the best experiences of my life.

What a Trip!

Youth camp 2012 was swaggerific. We got to meet some great people and have a great time. Three top things about camp:
1. A new found relationship with God
2. Litche (a fruit here in the cradle of civilization)
3. Milky Bars

The days have been long, hot, and sweaty but full of inspiration and fun. #theboys are chillin here on the bus while continuing to sweat. We will all miss this amazing place but most of us are ready to get home. I know I'm ready for pizza, wings, and American football. We miss you all and can't wait to see you all! Miss you Goodwin family, especially you mommy.

Love,
Stephen Goodwin

Playing Our Part

Today was the last day of camp! It is sad but also happy because we have all made new friendships and have built on old ones. During the thankful devo and ring of honor, I learned that some people didn't want to come at first. Yet, once they arrived, they made great new friends and had a wonderful time. They also said that they learned a lot about God and got closer to him through this camp experience. A lot of the people from Africa expressed their gratitude for the U.S. people that came. I know that it encouraged all of us. We all came here to play a role in helping this camp, and we all did our jobs.

Coming Home

This week at camp has been amazing. I am so thankful to God for the friendships I have made. I really did not want to leave to be honest. But I know I will remember this week for the rest of my life.  I pray that I will always remember the things I have learned because This experience was a gift from God. America, you need to get ready because I am coming back with a new take on life and I plan on sharing it.
Love,
Cassie :)

Corn bread, fried chicken, and sweet tea

Good morning!
Today is our last morning at the camp in Johannesburg. :(
The title if this blog is all southern because campers here have spent the week trying to copy our southern accent. How ironic since in America we always want a different accent.
I can not describe how much this camp has made a impact on me. The love and kindness that the South Africans have showed us has amazed me on a daily basis. From the second we arrived here we have been given above and beyond. Our host family and the church have taken such good care of us. I've really felt spoiled by the hospitality. Then once we finally got to the camp the campers where some of the nicest kids I have ever met. You could sit at a random table and within 5 minutes you would have a new best friend.
Jeff taught a lesson the other night about being a light, and how we can sometimes let parts of our heart go back into the darkness. Before this trip some parts of my heart had grown dark and hard...not anymore. The love I have felt here, the joy I see on the campers face, and the way God has blessed ever part of this trip has fixed every dark part of me. Africa really has brought me so much joy. I can't thank God enough of giving me this chance.
ALSO HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY AMAZING MOTHER!!!! I LOVE YOU!
Love, Adrienne Hames

Greetings from South Africa
I would just like to take the time to thank God for this opportunity he gave us to be able to have befriended so many Americans. I personally have learned so much spiritually in the past week. Thank you so much to Jeff, Mrs. Jen, uncle Rodwell and aunty Osyilia you were amazing.
To God be the glory.
Love Chet

Walls torn down

I have had the privelage to counsel the oldest girls (17-18 years old) on this trip, and to be honest, two days ago I might not have started off my sentence so positively. More than half of my girls didn't want to be here and it showed in their attitude. I've never had to persevere so hard with patience and being excited for the girls I was given. Last night I went to bed wondering if any impact would be left on the girls' hearts before they left. This morning, however, I can truly say I feel blessed. God revealed the work he's been doing on all of my girls' hearts since they've arrived 2 days ago. We had our thankful devotional this morning when everyone stands in front of the entire camp to express their gratitude verbally and publicly. As I expected, none of my girls got up to get in line. However, half way through, 3 of my campers got into line and wept about how they never wanted to come but they've had the best week of their life. Around me the rest of my girls cried out of the gratitude that was flowing from their hearts even though they didn't verbally express it. My heart is so excited right now by God's power and I was so moved to share it with you. I can't wait to share with you what will come of the next day and a half left now that God has torn down the walls of the older campers hearts.

Miss you all!
Love from Africa,

Last Full Day

Hey this is Braxton, and today is Friday and a lot of us aren't looking forward to going home (sorry family).  We had the grateful devo today and there wasn't really a dry eye in the room because everyone felt so connected that talking about how grateful we were for our new friendships that it hurt to know that we might not see everyone again, at least that's how it was for me.  I personally have made such an amazing time and I've felt so blessed that even the gift of the friendships that I've made has been enough to last me so many years.  To God be the glory.

Fevers are Breaking and Hearts are Opening

This afternoon my fever broke and besides the weak and wobbly knees I feel much better. Other than the two hour nap the doctor made me take today I haven't missed much...especially since I felt alive again today.  Thanks for your prayers.

And what a day to be alive.  We had so many challenges. Boys 8 beat Girls 1 in limbo.  What?!  We had a Flamingo challenge and a girl stood just over an hour on one leg to take the win. Wow, now that is determination! We also inducted 5 new victims, I mean people to the Chief Mau Mau club tonight.  Ha ha so funny.

We have also had our hearts moved as we heard several kids speak about the changes that have taken place in their lives in the past year. We had an all camp devotional about darkness (psalm 107 and 112) and several boys were moved.  The lights go out frequently here where the camp is and they went out for some time tonight, in fact we ate by candlelight. It was also raining and there were no stars out so we had a darkness devo instead of a starlight devo.

Tomorrow we head into our final day and the thankful devo, the cross study, and the ring honor are awaiting the kids all followed by a great dance party. Please continue to pray for no more sickness, safety and more hearts and characters to change.

Much love, Jeff

Ps. Have I mentioned how amazing the food has been. Wow! That's all I can say.

Pss. Feel free to comment on any blog entry as I share those with the kids.

G5 Swamp Corps

I'm only human. This phrase has never made much sense. People always seem to use this phrase when they severely messed up. This however is not the case for the women of girls five. We've realized together that though we are only human, God has brought us all together for a great purpose. Though we all come from different places and even speak different languages, our loud voices and crazy spirits have brought us together as one sisterhood. To God be the glory.

More than we can ask or imagine

I really like it here! The countryside is so beautiful, there is usually a breeze, and it is so peaceful. Last night we had our singing devotional around a big bonfire underneath the stars. I tried to drink it all in - that I was singing to God with 250 people in Africa. More than I could've ever asked or imagined. As happens on every trip, I have fallen in love with the people here.  The African kids are so polite and respectful. The adults are working hard in service - where are the teen workers when you need them?

The people here are in many ways tougher than we are - because their lives are tougher than ours. Their trust in God through their challenging circumstances is convicting. All (except Jeff) are doing well. Your kids are amazing and I am proud of each one.
Jennifer

The Unity of Believers

Today is the third day of our journey at camp. In  3 days I have seen something only God has created. The 12-13 year girls in my team have gone from strangers to inseparable friends over night, quite literally. I have heard singing in over five languages  the past two days. I have witnessed what I believe they call "impossible" in the world. These are the things I look forward to experiencing in heaven: complete unity from around the world. Peace and love

Amazing Stories

A day and a half in and already the stories are coming in: one girl, after hearing her the first Bible class, found her teen leader and confessed her sin, another girl asked her counselor to study the Bible, an older boy when asked why he came to camp honestly stated because "his parents made him," had a great conversation with his counselor, one of the counselors is so moved by the flow and atmosphere of camp he commented at length on the way it is impacting the kids, and I am expecting more to come.

Please pray for me as I have had a fever since Tuesday evening topping out at 104.2 last night. I am functioning but weak. The doctor is a great help and the way camp is going is motivating me to push on. Please to continue to pray for more amazing stories from the campers.

Much love, Jeff

Amazing day two

Today was the first full day  of camp, it's very hard to put into words what we are experiencing here. The children are all so happy, friendly and polite. You know God is in the mist of things when you can bring so many people from different backgrounds and nationally together as one, playing and having a blast. Their differences do not matter here. This place has a gift of bringing us closer to God. Today I realized once more how blessed I am, I had lunch with an African kid and we exchanged our conversion stories. He had lost his mother and father by the age of 12, and his 3 sisters by the age of 15, and still became a follower of Christ! God's love for us is always present, and regardless of the test we are given in life God plans are always right. Thank you Lord for loving us and allowing us to be in Africa and make an impact in lives of so many.

I'M IN AFRICA!

Africa is absolutley beautiful! Being at the camp and being a camper again reminds me that all of us, American and African campers/counselors are all the same. We may all come from different places, but really we're all alike. Campers here in Africa are the same in America. I don't know why I expected it to be different because its really not. I love being here. It's like a pause from the real world. One of my favorite things about being here in South Africa is the sunset. I know sunsets are technically the same everywhere you go, but in a way its different. Because here you can really admire Gods beauty and just look at it. To not think about the hecticness of everyday life is nice. I'm so grateful that I get to be here. Never in my life I would of thought I'd be in Africa. I want to thank God for just putting this idea in the minds of Jeff and Rodwell and making this happen. Thank you. I want to thank my mom for pretty much paying for this trip. Mom you will never really know how much I appreciate and love you. Thank you. I'm so excited to grow more in friendships and grow deeper in Gods word.

Hello from Africa!

The kids arrived today, and they are so excited to be here! Their smiling faces and eager hearts have shown me what all the hard work and travel and fund-raising were all about. Thank you so much to every person who helped get us here! I miss you all, but it will be hard to come home ;) -Tae

It's hard to say what it is that makes things run so well in spite of so many snares that have been left, but I am convinced that this camp is being run on faith and love. These kids came off of the bus today and I have been constantly impressed by how much everyone is working in spite of the travel and setup we all went through. It really is true that the heart of Jesus lives in this camp and I am so humbled to be here and so happy that I can help it work.  Thanks to everyone's support and prayers.JJ

Everyone Is Here

The other buses arrived...we are all accounted for: 204 campers, 33 counselors, 11 adult volunteers and 5 directors. It is so cool to hear the kids voices, their laughter, the other languages...the camp breathes life. We are looking forward to a great week!

Campers are Here!

The campers are here! The campers are here!

Campers are coming from two different locations, one bus load from Pretoria and two others from the north side of Joburg. The Pretoria group showed up but the other two buses ate running late. Either way we are glad the campers are here. Now we can get our camp on. Continue to pray for us.  Jeff

Poitjie the Pig

Kingdom! As I am writing to you, we are all sitting around the table munching on a South African dish called poitjie kos. Sounds like a Northerner saying porky. Everyone is buzzing with excitement of what is to come tomorrow. Today was all about team building and creating a family with people literally from all over the world. We got to share our insecurities and our dreams of how God will change the hearts of the kids...and ours. Please continue praying for us, especially since the kids will be coming tomorrow...all 185 of them. Much love from South Africa.

Africa New Years

I've done so much these past few days before camp has even started. On Saturday night the church there had a new years dance party. The whole church came to dance and celebrate the new year then have a midnight communion service. I tried imagining the church in Athens doing this. Anyway. In the party I got to crowd surf for the first time. Although this wasn't the smoothest thing Scuba claimed this would only help me get a girlfriend. This is a common subject with him since he himself is trying to find him an "African Princess." To top the night off the communion service was great with three prayers in three different languages and the new year marked the first day of my dads job for Swamp. Four hours later my host family took me and Adam, James, and Stephen at five in the morning to a game reserve where we saw giraffes, elephants, springbox, wildabeast, rhinos, boars, zebra, and baboons. We were incredibly close to many of the animals and got outside of the car, five feet away from a family of baboons. I also almost slapped a zebra on the butt because it  was in the middle of the road. After that we bargained in a market where I got a Zulu mask and a rhino and lion sculpture. I have done so much and I'm just now on my way to the camp.

Hanging with Our Hosts and Seeing Some Sights

We rang in the new year in South Africa! As we hugged each other and our new friends we all felt a sense of disbelief. Afterward we did a communion service. Three brothers prayed in three different languages - English, Afrikaans, and Zulu - so cool and inspiring. I thought about how the only reason we are in South Africa is because of the blood of Jesus. Not only are my sins forgiven and heaven is waiting, God gives me incredible opportunities in my life here on earth.

Today we are all hanging out with our host families doing different things.  A group of 13 of us went to tour Soweto. We saw Bishop Tutu's home as well as Nelson Mandela's.  The most moving place we saw was a memorial to the student
uprising that took place on Soweto in 1976. Many high school age students were killed in the protest and South Africans mark it as the event that led to the end of apartheid.  I am inspired to think about our teens and college students leading a spiritual uprising!

Tomorrow we head out to the camp!  We are eager and ready to begin what we came for especially after being inspired by the children of Soweto...truly our children can change the world.

Happy New Year!

Love, Jennifer
